- Christmas Edition
We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous and healthy New Year.
The New Year will bring further development here at the Clinic, as we look to introduce more services to the building. Dr Safia Debar will be joining us as an Occupational Health Physician and GP, and we are delighted that Dr Ali Joy will continue here with us as a General Practitioner in support of Drs Scurr, Haughton and Jordan.
We are also delighted that Dr Deepak Suri, Consultant Gastroenterologist, has joined us, and will continue to run weekly clinics here on Wednesday mornings. And ahead of the festive season, he has some sage advice to offer.
Christmas is a traditional time for parties, festivities and a few drinks. Alcohol in various forms has been drunk worldwide since 10,000BC. It has been part of religious festivities, a social lubricant, and facilitates social pleasure and relaxation. A small amount of regular drinking can be medically good for you.
However, long term excess or short term binge drinking (5 or more drinks in a man 4 or more in a woman) can cause heart, liver, sexual and social problems.
Finally be careful of the calories - a glass of white wine contains 80, a G&T 140 and a pint of beer upto 300. Cutting down the amount you drink regularly can be a good way to shed those extra pounds.Look after yourself and your liver this Christmas by:
- Knowing your alcohol limit
- Drink slowly
- Eat whilst you drink - a fatty meal especially will slow the absorbtion and reduce the consequences
- Skip a drink now and then - alternate with a soft drink
- Care with dark drinks (red wine, port, brandy) have high levels of congeners and therefore are more likely to leave you with a hangover.
- Drink plenty of water before you go to bed - it will reduce the likelihood of a hangover.
